St. Joseph's formally kicked off its 100th Anniversary Celebration with a special ceremony that included the announcement of its Honorary Centennial Co-Chairs along with its Centennial Special Events Calendar for 2008. The eight co-chairs, representing St. Joseph's volunteers, employees, clergy, physicians, and other key constituencies, will be honorary guests at the Hospital's various Centennial events throughout the year. The Honorary Centennial Co-Chairs were selected for their current long tenures serving St. Joseph's.
St. Joseph's President/CEO Sister Marie Castagnaro, SSJ said the Centennial Honorary Co-Chairs embrace the same spirit and idealism of the early founders of St. Joseph's. "The fortitude, courage and insight of our Honorary Centennial Co-Chairs have and to this day still continue to make St. Joseph's what it is today - a place for those in need of healing in mind, body and spirit," said Sister Castagnaro. "Our Honorary Centennial Co-Chairs represent and symbolize all of the many people over this past century who have contributed to the vitality and success of this institution."
Selected as St. Joseph's Honorary Centennial Co-Chairs are:
Joseph Calderone, MD - Member of St. Joseph's Medical Staff since 1971
Helen Coughlin - Charter Member of St. Joseph's Auxiliary since 1954

Among the many events planned to commemorate the Hospital's anniversary include a Celebration Liturgy with Bishop Matthew Clark at St. Peter & Paul's Church on September 24. It was on September 24, 2008 when a group of Sisters of St. Joseph of Rochester and several local physicians opened the doors of St. Joseph's to the Elmira community in 1908. Other special activities planned for this year include the Auxiliary's Centennial Gala Event on September 27 at the Elmira Country Club and a community celebration event featuring "Neil Berg's 100 Years of Broadway" performance at the Clemens Center on December 11.
Today's ceremony also featured the unveiling of a special photo exhibit recalling several of the Hospital's historic milestones over the past 100 years. The exhibit, which will be a permanent wall display in the front lobby, was designed and constructed through the efforts of employees Eric Coons, Lisa Davenport and Fern Leopold.
To commemorate the Centennial the St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation will complete its $1.7 million fund drive in 2008. Nearly $1.2 million was raised in cash and pledges during the silent phase of the campaign for endowment and the eventual renovation of the hospital's Emergency Department. The remaining $500,000 to be raised during 2008 will give supporters the opportunity to contribute unrestricted dollars for multiple purposes, including financial assistance for the uninsured as well as for patient programs and equipment upgrades. "Philanthropy has played a huge role in the history of St. Joseph's Hospital," according to St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation president, David P. Sullivan. "Our financial partners at all levels have made a difference and I know they will come through for us again in 2008."
