St. Joseph's Skilled Nursing Rehabilitation Services named after longtime St. Joseph's employee

In a dedication ceremony held today, St. Joseph's Skilled Nursing Rehabilitation Services officially became designated the St. Joseph's Marie Michael Center. Named after longtime employee and volunteer Sister Marie Michael Miller, SSJ, the Marie Michael Center will provide rehabilitation services for those patients requiring a longer period of rehabilitation. An acute inpatient rehabilitation patient usually requires two to three weeks of rehabilitation, while a skilled nursing rehabilitation patient may need approximately four to six weeks of care before going home.

Sister Marie Castagnaro, SSJ, St. Joseph's President/CEO said the Marie Michael Center, located on the Hospital's fifth floor, enables St. Joseph's to become the only rehabilitation program in our community to offer physical rehabilitation at both the acute and skilled nursing level. "Our team of physical, occupational, and speech therapists who treat patients at our acute rehabilitation level will be the same medical professionals treating our skilled nursing rehabilitation patients," said Sister Castagnaro. "St. Joseph's acute and skilled nursing rehabilitation program is dedicated to restoring a patient's independence through retraining programs and active participation."

Hired by St. Joseph's as a head nurse in 1950, Sister Marie Michael Miller, SSJ served as Director of the School of Nursing and Director of Nursing Service before becoming an Assistant Administrator in 1975. She received her Nursing Home Administrator's license in 1978 and served as Administrator for St. Joseph's 71-bed Skilled Nursing Facility until her retirement in April 2007. She currently volunteers for the Hospital's Pastoral Care Department.

Sister Marie Michael acknowledges the dedicated staff and supportive Hospital administrative team for opening St. Joseph's Marie Michael Center. "This venture is possible because of our excellent rehabilitation staff as well as our quality skilled nursing facility personnel," said Sister Marie Michael. "I pray that God will continue to bless St. Joseph's Hospital and its loyal and dedicated staff and volunteers."
