The National Kidney Foundation Serving Upstate New York is hosting a free Kidney Health Checkup on April 17, 2010 from 10am - 1 pm at Blessed Sacrament (Saints Peter & Paul) Parish Community Center, 160 High Street, for people who are at increased risk for kidney disease. One in nine adults has chronic kidney disease and most don't even know it. The checkup is part of the National Kidney Foundation's Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP) designed to identify and educate people at high risk - those with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of kidney disease. The checkup is underwritten by a grant secured from the New York State Department of Health by Senator George Winner, Jr. and Assemblyman Thomas O'Mara. St. Joseph Hospital is a volunteer partner of the National Kidney Foundation Serving Upstate NY.
Volunteer coordinator, Jo Whang of Penfield, NY explained that the kidney health checkup is valued at over $200 per person and will include blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, urine, and blood tests to check for any signs of kidney disease. A medical consultant will be on-site to review results with participants.
Participants must be at least 18 years of age and pre-registration is encouraged. Medical insurance is not required to receive the kidney checkup. To register for the free kidney health checkup, or to learn more, call 607-737-7810 and leave your name and telephone number and someone will get back to you.
"In previous kidney health checkups, up to 50% of those who participated learned they may have kidney disease. We know that if we start early with education, detection, and if necessary, medical intervention, we can often postpone the onset of kidney disease or kidney failure and in some cases, even prevent it from even developing," shares Sabrina Neal, RN, CDN, Administrative Director, Kidney Center of St. Joseph's.
