Nursing School History - Page 4

By the 1920's more nurses were entering the nursing field and enrollment in our School increased.   Houses around the Hospital were purchased to provide needed living space for these students.  This was also the era of Prohibition and the Flapper period (1919 - 1933).   The rules were very strict in those days but like all resourceful people, man  found solutions.

The 1930's were the Depression years with very little money available.  Carey's Drug Store on Church St. was the "hangout".   After study hours (7 - 9), you could go get a coke for 5 cents and they would even put a squirt of lemon or cherry in it.  How times have changed!!  In 1930, Edward J. Dunn left 1/10th of his estate to St. Joseph's Hospital and the Dunn Memorial was built in his memory.  The cornerstone was laid in 1930 and completed in 1931.
