Nursing School History - Page 3

These students lived in a house on the corner of E. Market St. and Dewitt Ave.  They lived on the first floor and the six original Sisters, who ran the newly formed Hospital, lived on the second floor.  They had one gas stove to heat the entire house.

Their work was difficult.  There was little theory taught and they learned by doing in an apprentice type method of education.  But they were the foundation and builders of all the wonderful years to come.  This first class graduated from St. Mary's Parish Hall on Fulton St. with Bishop Hickey presiding.  Along with their diplomas, they received a pin designed by Sr. Rose Alice with the School colors of blue and gold, with a gold cross in the center.  Future classes continued to receive these pins and wear them proudly.
